How much is my domain worth?
It is the most common question domain owners ask, and the honest answer is that there is no fixed price. A domain is worth what a buyer is willing to pay for it, so the most useful thing you can do is understand what drives that demand.
There is no fixed price for a domain
Unlike a physical asset, a domain has no inherent cost base. Two names of the same length can be worth very different amounts depending on what they mean and who wants them. That is why any valuation, including ours, is an indication rather than a guarantee, and why two buyers may value the same name differently.
What tends to increase value
- Length. Shorter names are usually easier to remember and type, which makes them more brandable.
- Real words and keywords. A genuine dictionary word, or a term people search for, carries more weight than a random string.
- Exact match for a product or service. A name that precisely describes a popular product, service or sector is attractive to end users in that space.
- Brandability. Names that sound like a business, are easy to say, and have no awkward spelling tend to command more interest.
- The extension. In the UK, .co.uk is the most recognised extension, with .uk close behind.
- A clean history. A name with a straightforward past is simpler to take on than one with a complicated history.
What tends to reduce value
- Hyphens, numbers and deliberate misspellings, which make a name harder to share.
- Very narrow or obscure terms with little end-user demand.
- Names that include a third-party trademark. We do not deal in these, and nor should you without advice.
- Less common extensions. We focus on .co.uk, .uk and .org.uk, and do not buy .me.uk, .net.uk, .ltd.uk or .plc.uk.
How buyers actually think about it
A serious buyer weighs up likely end-user demand, how the name could be used, and what comparable names have changed hands for. For a business, the question is usually how much easier the right name makes it to win customers. For an investor, it is whether the name can be sold on later. Both come back to the same thing: demand.
